Step Out of Your Bubble

Sometimes when we write, we like to stay inside our little bubble.  You know–that safe space you like to occupy when you write.  I like to write fiction.  I’d hate to write an article about microbiology.  That might conjure up memories of book reports, and required senior thesis projects.    But then I thought about it.  Microbiology is in fact very interesting.  In fact there are worlds within worlds within worlds in microbiology.  Dr. Suess knew this when he wrote the classic “Horton Hears a Who”.  Just like expanding outward towards the universe, things grow equally complex and interesting as we hone in on the smallest detail.  The deeper and smaller we go, the more interesting details emerge.

Writing is like that.   Writing about something you’ve never considered before becomes more than a challenge.  It becomes a quest and a thirst for new knowledge.  I challenge myself and challenge you:  What is it you’d like to write about but find it too:

  • Scary
  • Boring
  • Difficult
  • Close to home
  • Exhausting
  • Devastating

I find I get to know myself even more the longer I take the journey into the vast unknown.  But it requires two huge things of me:

LEAVING MY COMFORT ZONE

and

TAKING A LEAP OF FAITH

I don’t know where I’m going to end up yet as a writer.  Penniless?   In foreclosure?  On the NYTBSL?  In the looney bin?   Back to full time work at a “real job”?

I don’t know.  I’m just making it a daily habit as best I can.  I’m enjoying it.   You can’t force results.  You can only force the practice.  The key is to enjoy the process.  May you find courage today to leave your bubble today and write about it.

Sometimes just finishing what you start is leaving your bubble.   After all, it’s always easy to finish something……later!   Time to leave the bubble writers, before it goes….*POP*
